In a land divided into many independent city states, religion was a strong bond that helped the ancient Greeks to identify with each other and to distinguish their society from the world of the outsider. This film takes students on a journey to visit many of the major religious sites of ancient Greece, from the large temple of Apollo at Didyma; to the important sanctuary of Zeus at Olympia; and finally to the well-preserved archaeological sites in Athens. There is a discussion of the Greek gods and of the popular religious festivals: the Panathenaic Festival, the Eleusinian Mysteries, and the great drama festival of the city of Dionysia.

The companion Workbook includes maps, illustrations of Greek artifacts and photographs of archaeological sites. There are short discussions of the material covered in the film Questions are geared primarily for middle school and high school students and are excellent tools to stimulate classroom discussion. Teacher notes are included at the back of the workbook.

Recommended for Middle School and High School students.
