The Institute for Mediterranean Studies (IMS) promotes the study of ancient civilization in the Mediterranean basin and the Near East.

Many of the films offered were created for museum exhibitions and feature comments by the expert curators. They are an excellent source of educational material for the study of ancient art; ancient religion; women's studies; archaeology; childhood; and mythology. There is an opportunity to view museum exhibits; archaeological sites; and restaged ancient rituals, childhood games and athletic events. Detailed descriptions of a wide variety of vases, marble and bronze sculpture, pottery, tools and assorted artifacts add interest and give depth to each subject.

For those whose special interest is ancient Greece and Rome, topics include comparison of the Olympics past and present; training and combat of Roman gladiators; methods of casting bronze sculpture such as the lost wax process; social status of ancient Greek women; treatment of children; and religion and ritual in daily life.

The selection of films also offers the chance to learn about other ancient cultures, such as Egypt, in a video featuring an examination of mummies through modern autopsy methods; and Jordan, showing archaeologists at work at Pella in Jordan, the site of a village more than 10,000 years old.

The subject matter and presentation of the films are especially helpful in enhancing studies offered in colleges and universities and will appeal to middle and high school groups as well. Interested home viewers will also find the videos informative and entertaining.

The films are produced by the IMS and by its Australian partner, Astarte Resources.
